The final results are in.
Two weeks after his passing at age 76, the cause of death for OJ Simpson, the former Heisman Trophy winner, has been confirmed as prostate cancer, according to TMZ.
Orenthal James Simpson, as he was formally known, died on April 10, surrounded by his children and grandchildren, his family announced on social media.
In the months leading up to his passing, Simpson was active, even seen in Las Vegas without his cane. Reports of his prostate cancer diagnosis emerged around that time, which Simpson initially denied, especially dismissing rumors that he was in hospice care. In a lighthearted video on X, he laughed off the hospice rumors, stating, “Hospice! You talking about hospice? No, I’m not even in the hospital. I don’t know who put that out there.”
Simpson also shared that he was preparing to host a large group for a Super Bowl LVIII viewing party. In May 2023, he publicly disclosed his cancer diagnosis, explaining that he had started using medical marijuana to alleviate his chemotherapy side effects, noting, “I had to do the whole chemo thing… I started smoking a couple of puffs a day, and I only had nausea twice… The pot really helped me with the unfortunate side of catching cancer.”

His death has stirred a variety of reactions on social media. Caitlyn Jenner, a former friend who distanced herself from Simpson following his arrest and trial for the murders of his late wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman, expressed her disdain bluntly with a tweet saying, “Good Riddance #OJSimpson.”
Despite being acquitted in the criminal murder trial, Simpson was found liable in a civil wrongful death lawsuit in 1997, resulting in a multimillion-dollar judgment against him.
Reports from Page Six suggested that Simpson engaged in all-cash business dealings to avoid paying the restitution owed to the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman, allegedly paying only a small fraction of the owed amount.
