The New York Giants appear to have identified their top candidates for their future quarterback position.
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, North Carolina’s Drake Maye is the preferred choice for the Giants in the 2024 draft class, but they are also considering Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., possibly selecting him as early as the sixth overall pick if Maye is unavailable.
Contrary to previous reports, the Giants no longer seem interested in Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.
With several teams looking to draft quarterbacks early in Thursday’s draft, the Giants, under the guidance of General Manager Joe Schoen, are reportedly not planning to trade up for a quarterback. This decision follows last offseason’s commitment to Daniel Jones, who signed a four-year, $160 million contract.

Schoen has expressed confidence in the current quarterback roster, which includes the addition of Drew Lock this offseason. He remarked on the depth and experience within the team, citing not only Jones and Lock but also Tommy DeVito, who has shown significant improvement.
Given the high cost of trading up and Jones’ hefty contract, which many consider to be a sunk cost, the Giants are likely to stay put in the draft order. This strategy would make it challenging to secure Maye, who is projected to go in the top three picks.
Selecting Penix at No. 6 might be seen as an overly ambitious move, echoing the surprise pick of Jones at the same spot in the 2019 draft under a different management regime. Schoen, however, appears to be adopting a more cautious approach this time around.
