Last month, Aaron Rodgers entered the national political conversation as a potential running mate for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on an independent presidential ticket.
Rodgers discussed this for the first time on the I Can Fly podcast, where he also voiced deep concern for Kennedy, whom he refers to affectionately as “Bobby.”
Rodgers criticized the current two-party system, claiming it has been ineffective since the time of JFK and lauded Kennedy for his courage in political activism, citing the tragic Kennedy family history as evidence of the risks involved. “Bobby’s in danger, you know? Like he’s putting himself on the line. Why? Because he believes in this country. He believes in the good in people and he believes he can make a difference. That’s somebody I can get behind who’s willing to lay it on the line,” Rodgers said.
He also reflected on his own challenges since being named as a vice-presidential candidate, suggesting that he’s been targeted because he’s an independent thinker not controlled by any interests: “I got mentioned as a finalist to be, you know, Vice President on a ticket and they attacked me with some bizarre story from years ago,” Rodgers commented. He emphasized his independence, noting that his limited sponsorship deals are with brands he truly believes in and that he isn’t manipulated by external forces.

Rodgers’s entry into politics brought immediate scrutiny, including past statements he made that were controversial. For example, his comments shared with CNN’s Pamela Brown, which were criticized as fostering conspiracy theories. This shift to politics has exposed Rodgers to a level of analysis and criticism reserved for political figures.
During the podcast, Rodgers also critiqued current and past political leaders, indicating a dissatisfaction with the status quo which motivated his political involvement. He expressed skepticism about President Biden’s effectiveness and former President Trump’s tenure, suggesting neither were positioned to improve the country.
His candid nature and willingness to delve into contentious topics have sparked discussion about his suitability and intentions in entering the political arena.
Rodgers’s comments reflect a blend of personal conviction and a critique of what he sees as pervasive government control, resonating with some while drawing skepticism from others. His approach and viewpoints suggest he sees himself not just as a sports icon but as a potential catalyst for change in a broader societal context.
Hopefully we can all get back to talking about Aaron Rodgers playing football.
