Atlanta Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot has some explaining to do.
The Falcons pulled off a stunner by selecting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. eight overall in the 2024 NFL draft Thursday night.
Despite signing quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year contract this offseason, the Falcons decided to use their first round pick on the University of Washington product.
Afterwards, Fontenot had some explaining to do to Falcons owner Arthur Blank.

Social media loved this one.
It was certainly a baffling and widely criticized draft pick.
The selection was certainly a stunner even though, credit to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he did report yesterday that the “Penix watch” was starting with the Falcons at #8.
It’s believed that Penix Jr. could go as high as the eighth overall pick to the Atlanta Falcons.
The Falcons brought in quarterback Kirk Cousins to lead their offense this offseason so drafting a quarterback in the first round would be a major surprise if they indeed do so.
The oddsmakers aren’t taking much stock into this rumor though as Penix Jr. is still listed at +1000 to be selected in the Top 10 according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
As for the Falcons in particular, DraftKings Sportsbook has them at +3000 to select a quarterback with their first draft pick so this rumor appears to be a major stretch.”
Well, anybody who did take stock in those rumors and lined up a 30-1 bet for the Falcons to draft a quarterback is certainly happy now.
