The tragic death of Dwayne Haskins in 2022 sent shockwaves through the football world. The former Ohio State standout and NFL quarterback was struck by a truck while attempting to cross a Florida interstate on foot. Following his death, a wrongful death lawsuit was filed, and now, after more than a year of legal proceedings, the case has reached its conclusion.
Settlement Reached in Wrongful Death Case
Attorney Rick Ellsley, representing Kalabrya Haskins, the widow of Dwayne Haskins, announced this week that the wrongful death lawsuit filed in Florida has been dismissed. In a statement shared by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Ellsley confirmed that all defendants in the case have paid their respective settlements, officially closing the case.
“A significant development: Per Rick Ellsley, attorney for Kalabrya Haskins, as personal representative of the estate of Dwayne Haskins, Jr., a dismissal has been filed in the Florida wrongful death case. ‘Each of the various defendants have paid their respective settlements, so the wrongful death case in Florida is now closed,’” Rapoport shared on social media.
While the exact terms of the settlements remain undisclosed, the resolution brings a legal end to a case that highlighted the complex circumstances surrounding Haskins’ untimely death.
Allegations in the Lawsuit
The lawsuit, filed by Kalabrya Haskins, alleged that Dwayne Haskins had been the victim of a series of crimes and negligence leading up to his death. According to the legal filings, Haskins was reportedly drugged and robbed by four individuals just prior to being struck by a truck on the interstate.
Further accusations were directed at the truck operator, who was alleged to have been speeding, driving carelessly, and violating weight restrictions at the time of the incident. These allegations painted a troubling picture of the events leading up to the tragedy.
A toxicology report conducted after Haskins’ death revealed that he had a high blood alcohol concentration and the presence of drugs such as ketamine and methamphetamine in his system. However, his legal team argued that these factors were part of the alleged robbery and drugging, emphasizing that the truck operator’s actions also played a significant role in the fatal accident.
Dwayne Haskins’ Legacy
Haskins first rose to national prominence during his record-setting 2018 season as the starting quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes. In just 14 games, he threw for 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns, breaking school records and finishing third in the Heisman Trophy voting. His performance helped lead the Buckeyes to Big Ten and Rose Bowl titles, solidifying his place in the program’s storied history.
Following his standout college career, Haskins declared for the 2019 NFL Draft and was selected 16th overall by the Washington Commanders. However, his transition to the professional ranks proved challenging. Over two seasons with Washington, Haskins completed 60.1% of his passes for 2,804 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. He went 3-10 as a starter and was released midway through his second season.
Haskins was working to revive his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers when the tragic accident occurred. At just 24 years old, he was only a month away from his 25th birthday.
