In a recent episode of his “Games With Names” podcast, former New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman didn’t shy away from expressing his thoughts on Apple TV+’s “The Dynasty: New England Patriots” documentary.
Joined by former teammate Matthew Slater, Edelman openly accused their fellow former teammate Wes Welker of distorting facts about their shared experiences, suggesting that Welker’s personal bias against coach Bill Belichick may have colored his commentary.
The documentary delved into the illustrious 20-year history of the Patriots, chronicling their unprecedented success with six Super Bowl titles. During the podcast, Edelman voiced his frustration with Welker’s depiction of Belichick’s relationship with the late Aaron Hernandez.
Edelman vehemently refuted Welker’s assertion that Hernandez received preferential treatment, asserting, “Welker’s out here insinuating Aaron Hernandez had carte blanche at practice; that’s simply not true. Welker painted him [Hernandez] as some sort of untouchable figure.”
Edelman’s reaction to Welker’s alleged misrepresentations was candid and forceful, as he used strong language to express his disbelief. He exclaimed, “I distinctly recall Bill addressing Aaron’s behavior all the time. Let’s be real, Welk. Trying to peddle falsehoods. We all know you’ve got an axe to grind with Bill.” This unfiltered response showcased Edelman’s frustration with what he perceived as biased and inaccurate portrayals of their former coach and teammate.

In the documentary, Welker expressed his bewilderment over Belichick’s apparent favoritism towards Hernandez, commenting, “I remember thinking like, ‘Why does he [Belichick] favor this guy?’ I just don’t get it. But when you’re that talented, people tend to overlook a lot of things.” However, Slater opted to remain neutral on the subject, choosing not to delve into the dynamics between Welker and Belichick. He simply remarked, “Wes, I’m staying out of it, man, I’m just sipping my water,” prompting Edelman to interject, “I’ve got love for him too, but it’s obvious he’s got issues with Bill.”
The passionate discussion shed light on the intricacies of their tenure with the Patriots and the differing viewpoints of former teammates. Edelman’s fervent rebuttal to Welker’s claims underscored the loyalty and admiration he holds for his former coach, while acknowledging the strained relationship between Welker and Belichick.
The podcast exchange offered an unfiltered glimpse into the dynamics of their relationships during their time with the Patriots, providing fans with deeper insights into the complexities within the team.
