Shots fired!
Even a respected publication like the Detroit Free Press couldn’t resist a playful jab at the Dallas Cowboys on the eve of the 2024 NFL Draft hosted in Detroit.
In a cheeky social media post, the newspaper reminded everyone that the Detroit Lions, often seen as underdogs, have reached more NFC championship games this millennium than the storied Dallas Cowboys. “PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: With the football world descending upon Detroit today for the #NFLDraft, including fans of all 32 NFL teams, this is a great opportunity to remind Dallas Cowboys fans that the Detroit Lions have been to more NFC championship games this millennium,” the Detroit Free Press announced.

The historical context makes the comment sting more, as the Cowboys haven’t made it to a conference championship game since January 14, 1996, despite their massive popularity and historical success, which includes a Super Bowl win against the Pittsburgh Steelers shortly after their last NFC championship appearance.
Despite high hopes each season, the Cowboys have experienced a frustrating drought, winning only three playoff games in the last 14 seasons and suffering an early exit at the hands of the Green Bay Packers last year.
Meanwhile, the Lions, often the butt of NFL jokes, showed signs of a turnaround by winning the NFC North with a 12-5 record last season, even overcoming a contentious loss to the Cowboys along the way. They also snapped a 32-year playoff win drought by defeating the Los Angeles Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, though they missed a shot at their first Super Bowl appearance after losing a significant lead against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship.
As the NFL Draft begins, both the Lions and Cowboys are poised to strengthen their lineups, aiming to break through their respective barriers and advance further in the postseason.
