Numerous reports suggest that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is on track to become the next head coach of the Washington Commanders. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter expressed skepticism about the certainty of Johnson securing the position.
During an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show” on Monday, Schefter disclosed his reservations, stating, “First and foremost, I’m not convinced yet that Ben Johnson is getting the Commanders job.” He emphasized that while Johnson is considered the presumptive favorite, it’s not a guaranteed outcome, and the Commanders are actively exploring other candidates.
Schefter mentioned Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as one of the alternatives drawing the Commanders’ interest. He noted, “I think that they’re pretty impressed with Mike Macdonald and Aaron Glenn and Anthony Weaver as well, and I think those guys are going to have a legitimate chance to get that job.”

While speculation has linked Johnson to Washington and Dan Quinn to Seattle, Schefter expressed doubt about the accuracy of these predictions, stating, “I will bet you that at a minimum one of those is not right… maybe both.”
Despite Johnson’s track record as an innovative offensive coordinator, the Lions’ second-half performance in their recent surprising loss might pose challenges for him in securing new coaching opportunities.
