A prominent figure has emerged as a leading candidate in the Washington Commanders’ head coaching search, and surprisingly, it’s not Jim Harbaugh.
Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that the Commanders have honed in on Ben Johnson as their top choice. Johnson has garnered acclaim for his performance over the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
The pursuit of Johnson extends beyond Washington, as the Carolina Panthers are also expressing interest in him during this hiring cycle.
“While Washington is approaching the head coach search with openness and flexibility, the Commanders have identified Detroit’s Ben Johnson as their top choice, according to sources,” stated Russini. “Carolina is also looking to secure Johnson.”
In addition to the head coaching position, the Commanders have targeted San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters for their general manager role.
The outcome of their efforts to secure Johnson and Peters will unfold in the coming weeks, potentially marking a significant hire for the Commanders.

If Johnson indeed becomes the head coach in Washington, his initial priority will likely revolve around securing a franchise quarterback. Fortunately, the Commanders possess the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
As the NFL coaching carousel continues its post-regular season rotations, developments in coaching searches are expected to remain a focal point.
