Iga Swiatek, the world’s No. 2 tennis player and a five-time Grand Slam champion, has found herself at the center of a doping controversy that has sent shockwaves through the tennis community. Swiatek has been handed a one-month suspension after testing positive for trimetazidine, a heart medication that is prohibited in competitive sports.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced the suspension, which began in late September, after Swiatek’s positive test results came to light.
Trimetazidine, a medication used to treat angina and other heart-related conditions, is classified as a banned substance due to its potential to enhance endurance.
Swiatek, however, maintains that the trimetazidine entered her system unintentionally, claiming that it was likely the result of contamination from melatonin supplements she had been using to help regulate her sleep cycle. Swiatek’s suspension, though significant, is set to end in just eight days, and the Polish star will soon be eligible to return to the court.
In an emotional video shared on Instagram, Swiatek opened up about her experience and expressed her hope that her fans would continue to support her during this difficult time. Her candidness about the situation was a testament to her commitment to transparency and integrity, even amid adversity.
“I’m finally allowed… so I instantly want to share with you something that became the worst experience of my life,” Swiatek began. “In the last 2.5 months, I was subject to strict ITIA proceedings, which confirmed my innocence. The only positive doping test in my career, showing an unbelievably low level of a banned substance I’ve never heard about before, put everything I’ve worked so hard for my entire life into question.”
Swiatek went on to describe the toll the ordeal has taken on her and her team. “Both me and my team had to deal with tremendous stress and anxiety,” she said. “Now everything has been carefully explained, and with a clean slate, I can go back to what I love most. I know I will be stronger than ever. I’m leaving with you a long video, and right now I’m just relieved it’s over. I want to be open with you, even though I know I did nothing wrong. Out of respect for my fans and the public, I’m sharing all the details of this longest and toughest tournament of my career. My biggest hope is that you will stay with me.”

Swiatek’s vulnerability resonated with her fans, many of whom have expressed their unwavering support for the Polish star. Despite the unexpected setback, Swiatek has vowed to return stronger and more determined, focusing her efforts on preparing for her comeback in 2025.
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) also issued a statement of support for Swiatek, emphasizing her long-standing dedication to fair play. “Iga has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to fair play and upholding the principles of clean sport, and this unfortunate incident highlights the challenges athletes face in navigating the use of medications and supplements,” the WTA said.
The organization’s words underscored the difficulties that many athletes face when it comes to ensuring that the substances they take are safe and compliant with regulations.
Swiatek’s suspension has come during a year that was not her strongest by her own standards, but one in which she still achieved significant accomplishments. Despite the ups and downs of the season, Swiatek captured the French Open title and claimed a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, adding more accolades to her already impressive resume.
Her ability to persevere and succeed amid personal and professional challenges has only added to her reputation as one of the most resilient competitors on the WTA Tour.
With the suspension nearing its end, Swiatek’s focus now turns to the 2025 Australian Open, where she hopes to make her triumphant return to the sport she loves.
Many in the tennis community will be watching closely to see if the Polish star can reclaim her position at the top of the game and continue her journey towards even greater success.
The doping controversy may have cast a shadow over her career for a brief moment, but Swiatek’s determination to move forward and overcome this setback demonstrates the strength of character that has defined her career from the very beginning.
