Prayers up for Cameron.
Cameron Brink, the standout rookie for the Los Angeles Sparks, has embarked on her journey towards recovery following a significant setback. Earlier this month, during a WNBA game, Brink experienced a severe injury, tearing the ACL in her left knee.
This unfortunate event occurred during a tough game against the Connecticut Sun on June 18, where the Sparks were defeated 79–70.
The injury manifested in the first quarter as Brink was making an aggressive play towards the basket, resulting in her collapse and subsequent assistance off the court.
In the aftermath of this distressing incident, Brink underwent surgery to repair the damaged ligament. She took to Instagram on Tuesday to share her thoughts and update her followers on her recovery process. In a reflective post, Brink expressed a mix of emotions, stating, “So much change, yet so much joy.” This sentiment underscores her resilience and positive outlook despite the challenges.
The emotional impact of the injury was palpable when Brink initially addressed the situation on social media following the announcement of her season-ending injury. She conveyed her disbelief and determination, writing, “You never think it will happen to you. And despite all the hard work, sometimes it does. This is hard to fathom but I know it will only make me stronger. I will not be derailed and I will continue to love this life—I’m not defined by basketball, but it’s something that I love deeply and I will work everyday to get back to it.”
Before the injury, Brink had been performing impressively in her rookie season. In 15 games, she averaged 7.5 points, shooting 39.8% from the field, along with 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.
She even scored a career-high 21 points in a closely contested game against the Dallas Wings on May 26, which ended in an 84–83 loss for the Sparks.
Brink’s injury not only sidelined her from the WNBA season but also altered her plans for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where she was slated to represent Team USA in the 3-on-3 basketball competition. Her teammate, Dearica Hamby, will now take her place on the Olympic team.
Since Brink’s departure from the lineup, the Sparks have struggled, losing both games played without her and extending their losing streak to six as they prepare for their next game against the Phoenix Mercury.
Her absence is deeply felt, emphasizing her impact and importance to the team even as a rookie. Brink’s road to recovery is paved with challenges, but her spirit and determination shine as beacons of hope for her return to the court.
