Diana Taurasi, a seasoned WNBA veteran, has been officially named to the U.S. Olympic team, contrasting with the recent decision to exclude Caitlin Clark from the roster.
This choice has sparked considerable debate, with some viewing it as a severe oversight, while others predict that Clark, being the No. 1 draft pick, will have plenty of future opportunities to participate in the Olympics.
During a recent interview, Taurasi shared her insights on the matter, suggesting that international play differs significantly from the WNBA and college basketball. She emphasized the importance of adapting to various styles of play before competing internationally.
“The game of basketball is all about evolving. It’s all about getting comfortable with your surroundings,” Taurasi explained to USA TODAY. “College basketball is much different than the WNBA, and that’s different from playing overseas. Each one is like a different dance you have to learn. Once you learn the steps, the rhythm, and develop a skill set superior to everyone else, everything else falls into place.”
This perspective comes after Taurasi faced criticism in April for her comment that “reality is coming” for Clark as she transitions to the WNBA—a statement that has proven somewhat prophetic.
The matchup between Clark and Taurasi is highly anticipated, as they are set to compete when the Phoenix Mercury hosts the Indiana Fever on June 30.
This game will provide a platform for both athletes to showcase their skills and perhaps for Clark to demonstrate her readiness for international competition.
