Consequences have arisen from fans turning on each other.
A New England Patriots enthusiast tragically lost his life at Gillette Stadium last week, and it appears he may have suffered a severe head injury during an altercation with a rival fan.
According to Joey Kilmartin, who was present at the Week 2 game and spoke with the Boston Globe, Dale Mooney (the victim) engaged in what Kilmartin described as “mutual combat” with an individual sporting a Dolphins jersey on that Sunday. Although onlookers attempted to separate them, the fan in the Dolphins jersey managed to land two punches on Mooney’s head.
Kilmartin explained, “He [Mooney] went over to Section 311, and he basically engaged in mutual combat with another fan,” Kilmartin said. “A lot of people started trying to pull them apart… It looked like somebody was in the middle of them. And then a man in the Dolphins jersey reached over, and he connected with two punches to the victim’s head. It wasn’t something crazy or out of the ordinary until, 30 seconds later, the guy wasn’t getting up.”
Mooney was subsequently transported to the hospital, where he was later declared deceased.
The autopsy on Mooney is currently underway, with the results anticipated to be disclosed in the coming days. Whether these findings lead to legal actions such as prosecution or an arrest may not become clear until a later time.
