Former Detroit Lions cornerback Cam Sutton is currently wanted by police after a warrant for his arrest was issued earlier this month, and new details about the situation have come to light.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida announced last week that Sutton is wanted on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation. Authorities have asked the public for assistance in locating the 29-year-old. It was later disclosed that the warrant was issued on March 7, and efforts to locate Sutton have been unsuccessful.
On Monday, Lions president Rod Wood informed Dan Miller of FOX 2 Detroit that Sutton was present at the team’s facility last Wednesday when news of the warrant broke. Wood stated that members of the Lions organization advised Sutton to seek legal counsel and turn himself in. However, Sutton left the facility, and the team has not had any contact with him since.
“We learned about the warrant the same time everybody else did on social media. We were able to speak to Cam because he was actually in our building,” Wood said. “He showed up unexpectedly to work out. We were able to talk to him, and he left the building. We released him the next day, and no one has spoken to him since.”

The Lions subsequently released Sutton the following day.
The police responded to a call on the morning of March 7th at a residence in Lutz, Fla., where Sutton was accused of assaulting a woman before leaving the scene. Although Sutton owns a home in nearby Pinellas County, officers did not locate him there, and he did not respond to calls from detectives. It appears Sutton traveled to Detroit after the warrant was issued.
Sutton had signed a 3-year, $33 million contract with the Lions last offseason. He started all 17 regular-season games and three playoff games for the team, tallying 60 total tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble in what turned out to be his lone season with the franchise.
