Bill Belichick has recently taken on a new role as a media personality, much to the surprise of football fans. The former New England Patriots head coach has been featured on several high-profile platforms, from the ManningCast to The Pat McAfee Show, showing a different side of himself beyond the stoic persona he held as a coach.
However, with Belichick lending his voice to so many different outlets, there are concerns about him overextending himself.
It seems that everyone wanted a piece of Belichick’s newfound media presence, including Dave Portnoy and Barstool Sports.
The founder of Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy, recently revealed that he had approached Belichick with an offer to create a show similar to the one Belichick is currently doing with Matt Patricia on Underdog Fantasy. In hindsight, though, Portnoy expressed relief that the deal never materialized.
“We did talk to him. We were trying to get him to do a show,” Portnoy said Thursday during an episode of The Unnamed Show, where he was joined by Ryan Whitney and Kirk Minihane. “In hindsight, thank god we didn’t… He is doing so many things. And I think he’s great at ManningCast and a lot of the clips I’m seeing. The show that we would’ve had, he’s doing with (Matt) Patricia and with Underdog. That show, to me, is a dud.”
Portnoy explained that the timing didn’t quite work out for Barstool. “We were late to the game. But we were talking about it… It was super late in the game… I actually saw him the other day. I spoke at an Axon Conference—our friend Josh (Isner) was there, and he was there as well.” The opportunity for a partnership had come and gone, and with Belichick taking on numerous media engagements, Portnoy now believes it might have been for the best.
When the conversation turned to Belichick’s recent Halloween costume, Portnoy shared his thoughts, attributing Belichick’s newfound whimsical side to his 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson. “I think everything goes through Jordon,” Portnoy commented, adding that while that’s his interpretation of their relationship, he could certainly be wrong. The image of Belichick dressed up for Halloween sparked quite a reaction from fans, with Portnoy describing it as “a wild picture”—a sight that fans would not have associated with the usually reserved coach.
Portnoy also opened up about his interaction with Belichick during their discussions and noted that they never got into specifics about money. “My interpretation of him when I was talking to him was that he was not money motivated; he was intelligence motivated—to show he’s still got it with football. And he wants to get back into coaching,” Portnoy said.
It was clear to Portnoy that Belichick’s passion for the game still burned bright and that he saw his time in media as a way to stay connected to football while waiting for the right opportunity to return to coaching.

Portnoy added that he believes Belichick will eventually make his way back into coaching, but in the meantime, he’s thriving as a media figure. “He’s great at the media stuff,” Portnoy acknowledged, highlighting Belichick’s appearances on shows like ManningCast. “Belichick has all the back rivalry stuff that he drops in the ManningCast, like the crowd noise in Indianapolis and things like that. It’s very entertaining… And he takes shots at the Pats non-stop.”
Belichick’s willingness to share stories and insights from his coaching career has made him an entertaining presence in the media world.
The anecdotes, particularly about old rivalries and behind-the-scenes moments, have offered a fascinating look into the mind of a coach who dominated the NFL for two decades. His candidness, combined with his deep knowledge of the game, has made him a compelling figure for audiences who enjoy hearing stories from his storied career.
For now, Belichick seems to be enjoying his time in the media spotlight, but it’s clear that his heart still belongs on the sidelines. Fans, along with Portnoy, are waiting to see if—and when—Belichick will make his coaching comeback.
In the meantime, his entertaining appearances in the media provide a glimpse into the man behind the legendary coach, showing a side of Belichick that the public rarely saw during his years with the Patriots.
