Wemby is calling it how he sees it.
Despite a strong performance from Victor Wembanyama, scoring 27 points, the San Antonio Spurs suffered an 80-85 defeat to the Portland Trail Blazers at the 2023 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
In his postgame press conference, Wemby discussed the contrasting styles of play between the NBA and EuroLeague.
“First of all, the court is more open [here]. It’s going fast, but it’s less physical,” Wembanyama said. “I get fouled a lot, but not as much. Nothing to compare. Here, players are just flying. Out there, it’s more on the ground, pushing on the ground, big box-outs.
“Here, it’s great athletes, the best in the world. Way more talent. But I like this better, though.”
At just 19 years old, Wembanyama had a band-aid on his face from a scratch he received during the game.
However, he expressed his preference for the NBA’s fast-paced, less physical style of play.
He praised the athleticism and talent of the NBA, compared to EuroLeague.
Alongside his impressive scoring, Wembanyama also contributed 12 rebounds, three blocks, and one steal.
Despite his observations about the NBA’s physicality, Wembanyama has yet to face the challenges posed by NBA superstars such as Giannis Antetokounmpo and LeBron James.
The thinness of his frame has been a concern, and facing these top players will truly test his abilities. While Wembanyama excels in shooting from beyond the arc and displaying guard-like handles, his defensive skills will be vital against these formidable opponents.
Despite the team’s loss, Wembanyama’s performance was a step up from his previous game against the Charlotte Hornets.
Wemby has been officially shut down for the remainder of the Summer League.
