The Golden State Warriors have reportedly decided not to allow Andrew Wiggins to represent Team Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics, according to a source cited by The Toronto Star’s Doug Smith.
The Warriors are concerned that Wiggins could suffer an injury during the event, which could impact their efforts to trade the forward.
Wiggins last played for Team Canada during the Tokyo Olympic qualifiers in July 2021. Despite being invited to Canada’s 20-man training camp roster, his participation has been halted by his NBA team.
Wiggins is coming off his worst statistical season as a professional, averaging just 13.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 45% from the field. This dip in performance has added to the complexities surrounding his trade value and the Warriors’ decision.
Even without Wiggins, Team Canada boasts a strong lineup featuring 11 NBA players, including Zach Edey, the 2024 No. 9 overall pick. Canada’s schedule includes an exhibition match against the United States, coached by Warriors’ head coach Steve Kerr, on July 10 in Las Vegas. Following this, they will face host France on July 19 and the winner of the Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Puerto Rico on July 21.

Canada has been placed in Group A alongside Australia and two other nations yet to be determined. Their first contest is scheduled for July 27 against the winner of the qualifying tournament held in Greece.
The Canadian team is eager to build on their recent success, having won a bronze medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. This Olympic tournament will mark Canada’s first appearance since the 2000 Sydney Games, adding a layer of excitement and expectation.
For Wiggins, the decision by the Warriors is a significant setback. Representing his country at the Olympics would have been a prestigious opportunity. However, the Warriors’ priority is to ensure his availability and maintain his trade value, given the recent decline in his performance and the potential risks of injury.
As the Olympics approach, Team Canada will aim to showcase their depth and talent, hoping to make a strong impact despite the absence of Wiggins. The tournament promises to be a thrilling chapter in Canada’s basketball history as they strive for Olympic glory once more.
