Vikings Owner Will Not Commit to Signing Kirk Cousins After this Season

Minnesota Vikings owner Mark Wilf did not provide a definitive answer when asked about the team’s intentions to sign quarterback Kirk Cousins after the season.

Wilf deferred the decision-making to General Manager Kwesi and Coach Kevin O’Connell, stating that their discussions will determine the outcome.

However, Wilf emphasized that the team’s primary focus is on the upcoming 2023 season and striving to reach their potential.

“We’ll leave that to Kwesi (general manager) and coach (Kevin O’Connell) to work through those discussions,” Wilf said Tuesday, according to Kevin Seifert of ESPN. “There’s always conversations on that. But our real focus is 100% on 2023 and getting where we need to be and where I know we can be.”

Since joining the Vikings in 2018 with a three-year, $84-million fully guaranteed contract, Cousins has signed two extensions. His current contract includes a no-trade clause for this season, and he is scheduled to become a free agent in 2024.

During Cousins’ five seasons with the team, the 35-year-old quarterback led the Vikings to two playoff appearances. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the wild-card round by the New York Giants in the previous campaign after an impressive 13-4 regular season record.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Cousins’ future, Wilf expressed confidence in the team’s quarterback situation. He praised Cousins as an exceptional leader and expects great things from him in the upcoming 2023 season.

Cousins has accumulated a 46-33-1 record with the Vikings, throwing for 20,934 yards, 153 touchdowns, and 50 interceptions.
