Minesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell seemed to suggest that Dalvin Cook has played his last game in a Vikings uniform.
Cook has been surrounded by trade rumors all offseason. O’Connell only added to that speculation when asked about backup running back Alexander Mattison.
Kevin O’Connell speaking on Alexander Mattison and the RB room without Dalvin Cook
“It’s been really good to see Alex Mattison take a few more reps and really show that all 3-down ownership that he’s been capable of for a long time.”#skol @AlexMattison22 pic.twitter.com/fSroicUd8q— Sean Kenner (@SK_NFL) May 30, 2023
Mattison has been more than a solid backup during his time in Minnesota. He will also only cost the team $1.1 million next season.
Cook has been selected to the Pro Bowl in four straight seasons, but is owed a base salary of $10.4 million in 2023. If the Vikings do release Cook after June 1, the Vikings will save $12.5 million in cap space.
It’s hard not to read between the lines of what the Vikings head coach had to say. It seems very likely that Dalvin Cook will be playing his football somewhere else in 2023.
