Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid’s return to the court was cut short Friday night after he suffered a sinus fracture during a 121–107 loss to the Indiana Pacers. The injury occurred late in the second quarter when Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin inadvertently struck the right side of Embiid’s face while leaping for a rebound.
The Sixers’ medical team quickly diagnosed Embiid with a sinus fracture. According to The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Keith Pompey, Embiid will undergo further evaluation over the weekend, and the team will provide updates on his condition as they become available.
A Frustrating Return Cut Short
Friday’s game marked just the third appearance this season for the 7-foot center alongside teammates Tyrese Maxey and Paul George, a trio widely viewed as Philadelphia’s new Big Three.
Embiid had recently returned to the lineup after missing seven games due to swelling in his surgically repaired left knee, which underwent surgery in February to address a torn meniscus. Earlier this season, he also missed the first nine games while recovering from recurring knee swelling and serving a three-game suspension for an altercation with a member of the media.
Before exiting the game, Embiid logged 12 points, four rebounds, and five assists in 19 minutes of play. His presence was sorely missed in the second half as the Pacers surged to victory behind standout performances from Tyrese Haliburton, who recorded a game-high 32 points and 11 assists, and Pascal Siakam, who added 23 points. Obi Toppin chipped in 20 points off the bench for Indiana.

Team Struggles Despite Bright Spots
Despite Embiid’s early exit, the 76ers had notable contributions from other players. Tyrese Maxey led the team with 22 points, while Kelly Oubre Jr. recorded his third consecutive double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. However, the Sixers were unable to keep pace with the Pacers, who capitalized on Embiid’s absence in the paint.
The loss snapped a recent upswing for the 76ers, who had won four of their previous five games. Now sitting at 7–16, Philadelphia faces an uphill battle as it tries to climb out of the lower ranks of the Eastern Conference standings.
Embiid’s Impact and Current Averages
The reigning NBA MVP has faced a challenging season thus far, with injuries and interruptions hampering his ability to contribute consistently. Through his first five games of the campaign, Embiid has averaged 22 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3.6 assists while shooting 40.7% from the field.
The Sixers have struggled to find their rhythm without their star center at full strength, and his absence on Friday highlighted the team’s reliance on his presence on both ends of the court.
Looking Ahead
With Embiid’s status uncertain, the 76ers will need to lean more heavily on Maxey, Oubre Jr., and offseason acquisition Paul George to steady the ship. The team’s next steps will depend largely on the results of Embiid’s medical evaluation over the weekend.
While the Sixers have shown flashes of potential, their consistency and playoff aspirations hinge on the health and availability of their franchise cornerstone.
The 76ers will look to regroup and assess their path forward as they prepare for a critical stretch of the season. For now, the focus remains on Embiid’s recovery and his eventual return to the lineup.
