Verne Lundquist concluded his 40-year tenure as a commentator at the Masters with an emotional farewell last Sunday, coinciding with Scottie Scheffler’s commanding win at Augusta National.

Their brief exchange became a highlight of the day, and Lundquist later discussed this encounter on Charles Barkley and Ernie Johnson’s podcast, “The Steam Room.”
Lundquist recalled, “I made my way to the 16th as he was playing the 14th, and it wasn’t his best day—he was five-over and finished last. But despite his score, when he came off the green at the 16th and approached, I just said, ‘Tiger, thank you.’ He shook my hand, and we spoke for a short time. Honestly, I can’t recall all that was said, but I thanked him for his gracious words, and he told me, ‘We’re going to be tied at the hip forever’ because of that unforgettable shot and my call of it.”
This exchange underscores the deep connection formed through years of shared history at the Masters. Lundquist’s departure marks the end of an era, and his voice will undoubtedly be missed at future tournaments.
