Utah State University is grieving the tragic loss of one of its cherished football players, Andre Seldon Jr.
The 22-year-old athlete passed away on Saturday, July 20, following a cliff-diving incident at Porcupine Reservoir. His body was recovered by the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team around 9:05 p.m. local time, as confirmed by the Utah State Aggies’ website and ESPN.
The Cache County Sheriff’s Office in Logan shared a press release on Facebook, stating that deputies were dispatched to the dam at approximately 2:20 p.m. after receiving reports of a possible drowning. “Initial information indicates that a young adult male was seen diving from cliffs into the water and did not resurface,” confirmed Lt. Tim Ramirez. The sheriff’s office later added, “Our initial investigation leads us to believe this is a tragic accident as multiple witnesses recount the same information,” extending heartfelt condolences to Seldon Jr.’s family and friends.
In a tribute on the college team’s website, interim head coach and defensive coordinator Nate Dreiling expressed the team’s sorrow: “Our football program is heartbroken to have to endure the loss of one of our own.” Seldon Jr. had joined Utah State’s football program over the summer and was set to start classes in the fall semester.

Seldon Jr. had a notable football career, having played for two seasons at New Mexico State University under the guidance of Coach Nate Dreiling before transferring to Utah State. Prior to that, he spent two seasons at Michigan and prepped at Belleville High School in Belleville, Michigan. Dreiling shared his personal connection to Seldon Jr., saying, “Having had a previous relationship with Andre during our time together at New Mexico State, I can tell you he was an incredible person and teammate. Our condolences and prayers go out to Andre’s family as we grieve with them over this tremendous loss.”
Diana Sabau, Vice President and Director of Athletics, expressed the university’s collective sorrow: “Our Utah State University Athletics family is devastated over the sudden death of Andre Seldon Jr. We extend our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and all who loved Andre.”
In response to the tragedy, the university has offered emotional and mental support to athletics staff and student-athletes. This support aims to help the community cope with the profound loss of a promising athlete and beloved teammate.
