There is unrest among the University of Kentucky men’s basketball program.
For the second time in three seasons, Kentucky men’s head basketball coach John Calipari has seen his team meet an unceremonious end in the NCAA Tournament at the hands of a heavy underdog in the first round.
In 2022, second-seeded Kentucky shockingly lost to 15th-seeded St. Peter’s University.
This year, Calipari’s Wildcats were a three-seed and lost to the 14th-seeded Oakland Golden Grizzlies led by three-point shooting sensation, Jack Gohlke.
This has led to quite a bit of unrest among the Kentucky faithful and calls for Calipari’s job as head coach have been made.
However, Calipari will be returning for a 16th season as announced by athletic director Mitch Barnhart on X.

“As we normally do at the end of every season, Coach Calipari and I have had conversations about the direction of our men’s basketball program and I can confirm that he will return for his 16th season as our head coach.”
Calipari is regarded as one of college basketball’s all-time great coaches, but his recent track record at Kentucky has been underwhelming.
Calipari has only won one National Championship (2012) with Kentucky since he signed on as their head coach in 2009, but has led them to four Final Fours in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015.
The 65-year-old also has previous Final Four appearances with the University of Massachusetts in 1996 and the University of Memphis in 2008.
Both of those Final Four appearances were vacated, although Calipari was cleared of any wrongdoing in both cases.
