Troy Aikman, the NFL Hall of Famer and veteran broadcaster, has always appeared to be thriving in the public eye. However, behind the scenes, he was quietly struggling with the end of his second marriage to Catherine “Capa” Mooty. In a rare and candid interview, Aikman opened up about the emotional toll of that period in his life, describing the moment he realized his marriage was falling apart as his personal “rock bottom.”
“A failure. That was my rock bottom,” Aikman admitted during his conversation with The Athletic. The typically private sports icon expressed how difficult it is to talk about, even years after the divorce. “I’m embarrassed to talk about it now,” he said, acknowledging that it’s not something he often shares.
Aikman and Capa had a whirlwind romance, marrying in September 2017 in an intimate ceremony in California. This came just three months after Aikman proposed to her during a romantic trip to Lake Como, Italy. Their relationship had blossomed quickly, reportedly dating for a year before tying the knot. At the time, everything appeared perfect, but Aikman now reveals that behind the public façade, things were beginning to unravel.
Reflecting on his personal struggles, Aikman shared insights into his mindset during that time. “For me, contentment was always a four-letter word,” he said. “I never wanted to be content. I didn’t wanna be around anyone who was content. That’s just not a place I could land.” This drive to constantly push forward, to never settle, became a source of inner conflict that eventually affected his relationships.

As the marriage with Capa deteriorated, Aikman recalls feeling lost. He described the moment he realized his second marriage was failing: “One day I just looked up and realized it was crumbling.” Despite the image of success he maintained publicly, Aikman confessed that he was wrestling with deep emotional turmoil that no one knew about. “The success everyone saw masked the inner turmoil no one knew about. I’ve wrestled with it for decades, warring against my own happiness, chasing a finish line I’m not even sure exists,” he said.
According to The Athletic, it was this battle with contentment—something that Aikman feared might rob him of his drive—that ultimately contributed to the collapse of both of his marriages. Aikman’s quest for something more, coupled with his inability to find satisfaction in the present, led to emotional strain that he couldn’t overcome.
Aikman has two daughters, Alexa Marie and Jordan Ashley, from his first marriage to Rhonda Worthey, a former publicist for the Dallas Cowboys. He and Worthey split in 2011 after a decade of marriage, but it wasn’t until around 2020 that his marriage to Capa quietly ended. Unlike his first divorce, Aikman did not make any public announcements about his separation from Capa, who still uses his last name on her Instagram. Sources close to the situation told The Post that the couple divorced around 2020, although the official news didn’t surface until mid-2023.
In June 2023, Aikman went public with his rumored girlfriend, Haley Clark, a Dallas native who works in sales for a men’s custom clothing company.
Clark posted photos of the two vacationing together in Italy, further fueling rumors about Aikman’s new relationship. A month later, People magazine confirmed that Aikman and Capa were officially divorced, solidifying the end of his second marriage.
However, it remains unclear if Aikman and Clark are still together.
Capa Mooty, who co-owns Luxeliner, a mobile shopping business, has two sons from her previous marriage to real estate attorney Jerry Mooty. As both Aikman and Capa have moved on, Aikman’s reflections on his personal life offer a rare glimpse into the struggles and emotional challenges he has faced off the field.
Though he has reached incredible heights in his career, his journey through marriage, divorce, and self-reflection shows that even the most successful individuals grapple with the complexities of life and relationships.
