Ed Kelce, father of retired Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, recently felt the need to clarify comments he made about Kanye West’s mental health.
On Thursday, August 15, Ed took to Facebook to address the situation, sharing an article from Sports Illustrated that covered his original remarks, along with an amended explanation.
In his post, Ed explained that his previous comments were not intended as a harsh criticism of West, but rather as a reflection on the rapper’s mental health struggles. “I feel the need to clarify that my comment on Kanye West was not so much a criticism as it was my thoughts on his mental health,” Ed wrote. He was referring to his initial reaction to West’s new song, which mentions Travis Kelce and his girlfriend, Taylor Swift—a mention that caught significant attention due to Swift’s well-known, longstanding feud with West.
Ed elaborated on his thoughts, expressing concern over West’s behavior and comments, which he described as indicative of “paranoia and over-inflated sense of self-worth.” He noted that while it might be tempting to attribute these actions to drug use, similar traits have been exhibited by many individuals throughout history who were not under the influence of substances. “This is a talented guy and hopefully he’s getting help with these issues,” Ed added, emphasizing his hope that West is receiving the support he needs.

The clarification followed an earlier Facebook post from August 8, in which Ed had originally referred to the mention of Swift and Travis in West’s song “Lifestyle” as “mental illness on full display.” The song, a collaboration between West, Ty Dolla $ign, and Lil Wayne, is featured on West’s latest album Vultures 2.
The specific line, rapped by Lil Wayne, goes: “I twist my Taylor spliffs tight at the end like Travis Kelce,” referencing both Swift and the star NFL player.
Ed Kelce, who often uses Facebook to share articles and updates about his sons, found himself at the center of a conversation about mental health after his initial comments were interpreted as a direct critique of West.
With his clarification, Ed sought to ensure that his message was understood as one of concern rather than condemnation, highlighting the importance of compassion when discussing issues related to mental health.
