An old statement made by Tom Brady about a missed call in a Patriots vs. Chiefs game is gaining renewed attention following Patrick Mahomes’ heated reaction on the sideline during Sunday night’s game.
In the recent matchup, Mahomes and the Chiefs faced a 20-17 defeat against the Bills. A critical go-ahead score late in the fourth quarter was nullified by a referee’s call of offensive offsides on Kadarius Toney. Subsequently, Buffalo stopped Kansas City on fourth down a few plays later.

Mahomes expressed his frustration on the sideline, delivering postgame criticism of the referees. He highlighted the impact of the call on the game’s outcome and emphasized the absence of a warning throughout the match.
“It’s tough to swallow. Not only from me, and football in general, to take away greatness like that, for a guy like Travis to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game. They’re human. They make mistakes. But every week, we’re talking about something,” Mahomes said.
“It’s the call. Just in that moment. Not for myself. To have a flag change the outcome of the game. I’ve never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn’t a warning the entire game. And then you make a call like that in the final minute? Another game, we’re talking about the refs. It’s not what we want for the NFL. It’s not what we want for football.”
While complaints about referees are commonplace, Mahomes’ comments were considered by some as excessive. Contrastingly, in 2019, when the referees made an incorrect out-of-bounds call on Patriots wide receiver N’Keal Harry on a pass from Tom Brady, Brady chose a more measured response, stating, “it is what it is.”
Brady’s decision to take the high road with his comments is in contrast to Mahomes, who appeared to let emotions take over. As the ongoing comparison between Mahomes and Brady persists, their reactions to contentious calls continue to draw scrutiny and comparison.
