The tension between Tom Brady and the New England Patriots reached a breaking point in 2019, with reports suggesting Brady was prepared to sit out the entire season amid contract negotiations.
According to Tom E. Curran, Brady was seeking a new contract ahead of the 2019 season, aiming for a two-year, $50 million deal.
Despite eventually reaching an agreement, Brady had informed then-Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer to be ready to step in for the entire year.

Hoyer recounted the moment, stating:
“I remember one day Tom coming to me and being like, “Hey babe, just be ready to play the whole year.’ And I remember being like, ‘What happened? Did you get hurt? What’s going on?’ And he said, ‘I just want to prepare you,’ and he kind of left it at that,” Hoyer said on Friday’s “The Dynastic Post Show.”
“I don’t know if you all remember, there was the day in training camp that year where he didn’t practice. I got all the reps because at the time, it was just me and (Jarrett) Stidham. The next day, he had that new contract. And I think at that point, it was more about being able to become a free agent after that year.”
There was a notable day during training camp when Brady didn’t practice, allowing Hoyer to take all the reps alongside Jarrett Stidham. The following day, Brady secured a new contract, which Hoyer believes was pivotal for Brady’s future as a free agent after the season.
Ultimately, Brady signed a two-year, $70 million contract in 2019 before parting ways with the Patriots. He then joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency, where he promptly won a Super Bowl in his first season with the team.
