The Chicago Bears could soon finalize the groundwork for a potential trade involving their starting quarterback, Justin Fields, amid increasing speculation that the team intends to select a passer with the first overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
While Fields showed signs of progress in his third NFL season, doubts linger about his long-term suitability for the Bears.
According to Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer, the framework for a trade deal could take shape as early as next week.
“I’d expect, whatever the plan is, the execution really starts going next week,” Breer shared during an interview on ESPN 1000 radio in Chicago. “I think the bones of [a trade] could be there next week.”

With the NFL offseason looming, the Bears face the need to kickstart negotiations for a Fields trade sooner rather than later.
“I think that that’s why if you’re the Bears there’s some urgency to get moving on this because if you’re going to get the best return, the best return is probably going to be available to you right now rather than three, four, five weeks from now,” Breer emphasized.
While the quarterback market in free agency is somewhat limited, enticing names like Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, and Baker Mayfield could potentially attract interest. Chicago is banking on the allure of Fields prompting teams to pursue a trade rather than waiting for the open market.
This strategic move aims to create space for a quarterback in the draft, with the Bears poised to make the No. 1 overall selection, widely speculated to be top prospect Caleb Williams from USC.
Fields’ tenure in Chicago has been marked by challenges, including working with three different offensive coordinators in as many seasons. However, despite setbacks, he achieved career highs in passing yards and rushing yards during the injury-marred 2023 campaign.
Recently, Fields unfollowed the Bears on Instagram, citing a desire to declutter his social media before embarking on vacation. Nevertheless, he expressed his fondness for Chicago and his hope to remain with the team.
“Of course, I want to stay,” Fields affirmed during an appearance on ‘The 33rd Team’ podcast. “If it was up to me, I would want to stay in Chicago. I love the city. The city’s lit. The fans there, they’re great. It’s a business. I ain’t got no control over it. Whatever happens, happens.”
