On Saturday, Texas drew inspiration from a memorable Baker Mayfield moment after they thoroughly dismantled Oklahoma in the latest installment of the Red River Rivalry. No. 1 Texas dominated No. 18 Oklahoma with a commanding 34-3 victory at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
The game started with Oklahoma’s defense putting up a solid resistance, forcing Texas to go scoreless on its first three drives. However, the Longhorns found their rhythm in the second quarter, exploding for 21 points and seizing control of the game—a lead they would never surrender.
After the win, some Texas players took the opportunity to send a not-so-subtle message to Oklahoma alum Baker Mayfield.
Texas linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. laid an old Mayfield Oklahoma jersey at midfield, and teammate Barryn Sorrell added to the moment by planting a Texas flag right on top of the jersey—a clear nod to one of Mayfield’s most infamous college football moments.

Seven years ago, Mayfield made headlines when he planted an Oklahoma flag at the center of Ohio State’s field after his Sooners defeated the Buckeyes on the road.
While Mayfield didn’t drive the flag through any jersey, his bold move sparked controversy, leading him to issue an apology days later.
It remains to be seen whether Hill and Sorrell will feel compelled to apologize for their actions, but the symbolism was clear. This move could also be seen as retaliation for an earlier pregame incident where an Oklahoma player had made a disrespectful gesture toward Texas, adding another layer to the rivalry’s intensity.
For Texas, this victory—and the postgame theatrics—may have felt like a long-awaited moment of payback, reminding Oklahoma and its former star that the rivalry runs deep.
