Talk about striking while the iron’s hot.
Just under a week before they are set to reunite as conference rivals in the SEC, Texas and Texas A&M have added a significant twist to their storied rivalry.
Jim Schlossnagle, the head baseball coach of Texas A&M, is reportedly making a high-profile move to the University of Texas.
This news, reported by Chip Brown of Horns247 on Tuesday afternoon, comes hot on the heels of the Aggies’ narrow 6-5 defeat to Tennessee in the decisive game of the Men’s College World Series finals, which concluded just the night before.
Schlossnagle had been asked about his potential move to Texas during a postgame press conference on Monday, which he dismissed as a “selfish” line of inquiry.

Despite the timing of the question, reports now confirm Schlossnagle’s intent to transition to Texas, bringing his entire coaching staff with him to Austin.
This move marks a significant career shift for Schlossnagle, who has been a head coach since 2002, leading programs at UNLV, TCU, and Texas A&M.
His coaching tenure includes seven appearances in the College World Series, highlighting his substantial experience and success in college baseball.
The University of Texas, set to officially join the SEC coming Monday, has been looking for a new head coach since the firing of David Pierce.
Pierce was let go on the same Monday after serving eight seasons with the Longhorns, a team with a rich history that includes six national championships, although their last title was in 2005.
The timing of Schlossnagle’s reported move is particularly poignant given the imminent shift of Texas into the SEC, setting the stage for renewed direct competition with Texas A&M, and intensifying the rivalry between the two storied programs.
Schlossnagle’s switch from Texas A&M to Texas adds a personal and dramatic narrative to this transition, making the rivalry even more compelling as both teams prepare to contend under the same conference banner once again.
