Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott may be heading into his last season with the Cowboys as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the Cowboys and Prescott have a “mutual understanding” regarding his contract situation, and there is “no indication” an extension will be reached.
This of course has led to speculation about who may replace Prescott, and a very surprising name has been floated around.

This from USA Today’s K.D. Drummond:
“Trey Lance, already in Dallas, is in a group of haven’t-yet-established guys along with Justin Fields who is now in Pittsburgh,” Drummond wrote in a March 19, 2024 story titled, “It may be time for Cowboys to focus on 2025, so here’s the plan.” “What if Russell Wilson bounces back with the Steelers? He’s a free agent after next year as well.
“Arizona’s Kyler Murray becomes tradeable in 2025 with a dead cap hit to the Cardinals of $33 million and $12 million of savings if traded, and he has no guaranteed money remaining after that season for the acquiring club.”
Russell Wilson signed a one-year-deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason so it is reasonable that he could be an option to replace Prescott if he re-establishes himself from his disastrous stint with the Denver Broncos from 2022 and 2023.
All reports indicate that Wilson will enter the season as the starter despite their trade for Justin Fields, but the Steelers likely won’t hesitate to replace him with Fields if he’s unable to regain his pre-Broncos form.
