As Bill Belichick awaits his next coaching opportunity, his son, Steve Belichick, has already embarked on a new chapter in his coaching career after parting ways with the New England Patriots.
Having served various defensive coaching roles with the Patriots for over a decade, Steve is making the transition to college football. He’s set to join former Patriots colleague Jedd Fisch’s staff as the defensive coordinator at Washington.
In a rare media appearance on Chris Long’s Green Light podcast, Steve shed some light on his father’s mindset following his departure from the Patriots and his absence from coaching in 2024.
“I think he’s good. Let the stuff roll off your back and move forward,” Steve Belichick said of his father. “He doesn’t dwell, unless we lost the game and he needs to get on some guys, but eventually you need to turn the page. Honestly I wasn’t too involved in any of that stuff, he did his thing, I did my thing and that was kind of that.”
While Bill Belichick is reportedly eyeing coaching opportunities for 2025, Steve hinted at potential media ventures during his father’s hiatus, joking about becoming a regular guest on Long’s podcast. Reflecting on his own personality and humor showcased during his stint on College GameDay for the Army-Navy Game, Steve suggests there’s more to him than meets the eye, particularly after his lengthy tenure with the Patriots.
Apart from potential media engagements and leisure time in Nantucket, Steve anticipates his father’s continued immersion in football analysis. Bill’s keen eye for dissecting the game could prove beneficial to Washington, as Steve expects him to contribute in evaluating schemes and players, possibly making appearances with the team throughout the year.
“His hobbies would still be to critique football,” he said. “So you know he was excited when I came out here because he got to evaluate the scheme last year, evaluate the players last year. I’m sure he’ll come out here at some point to do some stuff. The guy just loves football.”
In essence, while Bill Belichick takes a temporary break from coaching, Steve is poised to make his mark at Washington, with his father’s ongoing passion for football serving as a guiding force in their respective journeys.
