Steve Belichick, the newly appointed defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies and son of the renowned NFL coach Bill Belichick, delivered a cutting remark about his father during a media session on Wednesday.
When asked about the difference between himself and his father, the former New England Patriots head coach, Stephen responded with characteristic bluntness: “We definitely have similarities. I have a job, he doesn’t.”
The room erupted in laughter at the jab, to which Stephen added, “He knows that.”
Furthermore, Stephen emphasized his desire to forge his own path and not live in his father’s shadow indefinitely. “I look up to my dad. He mentored me. But I’m myself,” he explained. “I’m excited to get out on the field and work with these guys and recruit the kids and just kind of be myself and not try to be him.”

Steve Belichick was introduced as the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington, where he aims to carve out his own legacy. Previously, he served as a defensive assistant on his father’s staff with the New England Patriots from 2012 until the recent season, coaching various defensive positions.
Despite being offered the opportunity to remain on staff under new head coach Jared Mayo, Stephen opted to chart his own course and transition to the college ranks.
His appointment at Washington comes under the leadership of new head coach Jedd Fisch, who previously coached at the University of Arizona.
Bill Belichick concluded his illustrious tenure with the New England Patriots after 24 seasons, marked by six Super Bowl victories and nine AFC titles. With 333 career victories, he ranks second only to Don Shula, according to ESPN.
Following his departure from the Patriots, Bill Belichick pursued other coaching opportunities, including an interview with the Atlanta Falcons, but ultimately did not secure a coaching position for the 2024 season.
