Dallas Cowboys General Manager Stephen Jones is working to repair the fallout caused by his father, team owner Jerry Jones, after the latter made controversial remarks about the team’s star wide receiver, CeeDee Lamb, on Thursday.
Lamb, who earned first-team All-Pro honors last season, sparked concern among fans when he removed all references to the Cowboys from his social media profiles.
This came shortly after Jerry Jones commented on the ongoing contract negotiations, stating, “I don’t have any urgency to get it done.” The dismissive tone didn’t sit well with Lamb, who responded with a simple yet telling “lol” on social media, signaling his displeasure.
The tension didn’t end there. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who is also seeking a new contract, expressed a starkly different perspective from the team owner. “I got urgency for it to happen,” Prescott told reporters, highlighting the disconnect between the players and management on this issue.
Amid the brewing discontent, Stephen Jones, who serves as the Cowboys’ Director of Player Personnel, stepped in to mitigate the damage. On The Doomsday Podcast with Ed Werder, Stephen made an effort to smooth things over, expressing his appreciation for Lamb and acknowledging the receiver’s concerns.
“We think the world of CeeDee and understand where he’s coming from on this,” Stephen Jones said, addressing Lamb’s absence from the team’s activities. “We’re working very hard on getting this deal done.” His comments starkly contrasted with his father’s earlier remarks, offering a much-needed reassurance to Lamb and the Cowboys’ fanbase.

Stephen Jones emphasized the importance of securing Lamb’s future with the team, noting that signing him to a long-term deal is a priority. “We plan on doing it,” he continued. “We want all three players here, and we have the best chance of winning a championship by having those players on our roster.”
In addition to Lamb, star edge rusher Micah Parsons is also in pursuit of a long-term contract, adding further pressure on the Jones family to manage negotiations carefully.
With multiple key players seeking new deals, it’s clear that the Cowboys have significant work ahead.
As tensions simmer, it’s evident that Stephen Jones is taking a more diplomatic approach than his father, aiming to ensure that the Cowboys’ superstars feel valued and respected.
If these negotiations are to end on a positive note, it seems prudent for the Cowboys to let Stephen take the lead in these critical discussions.
