Stephen Curry is set to make his scripted television debut this summer in a role that is both familiar and new — playing himself!
The NBA superstar, 36, will grace small screens everywhere when his new Peacock series, “Mr. Throwback,” premieres on August 8.
The comedy series stars Adam Pally, Ayden Mayeri, and “Saturday Night Live” cast member Ego Nwodim. The plot follows basketball prodigy turned struggling memorabilia salesman Danny Grossman (played by Pally), who seeks redemption by reconnecting with his middle-school teammate, Curry.
Curry, who serves as an executive producer on the series alongside creator David Caspe and writers Matthew and Daniel Libman, expressed his excitement about the project. “I am honored to have joined the hilarious Adam, Ego, Ayden, and the amazing producing team,” Curry said in a statement. “I was excited to step into the world of scripted comedy with ‘Mr. Throwback,’ a story with love for family and friends at its center.”

The Golden State Warriors point guard also hinted that the character he portrays in “Mr. Throwback” will be a departure from his real-life persona. “I’m looking forward to viewers getting to see me play a version of myself no one has ever seen before,” he continued. “I hope they feel connected to the characters and the dilemmas they face throughout the series.”
In the official trailer for “Mr. Throwback,” released on July 24, Curry teases the unique “version” of himself and some of the comedic moments to come. “This is a story of one of the most dominant basketball players of all time,” Curry says in the preview. “A player so electrifying, so beloved on and off the court … I’m not talking about me. I’m talking about Danny Grossman,” he clarifies as Pally’s character appears on screen and embraces him.
The trailer then shows throwback footage of a young Grossman and Curry playing basketball together, with Curry reminiscing about their past. “We called ourselves the ‘Splash Siblings,’” Curry says. “Danny was so good. I was his backup. Danny was so cool. I was his friend.”
The series appears to follow the making of a documentary initially centered on Curry, which shifts focus to Grossman, much to the chagrin of its creators. “Somehow I went from following a once-in-a-generation talent/humanitarian changing his sport and the world to following…” one of the filmmakers laments as Grossman runs behind them.
Nwodim’s character adds in a voiceover, “People love a redemption story. But you know what people love even more? A train wreck.”
“Mr. Throwback” promises a blend of humor and heart, highlighting themes of friendship and redemption.
The show premieres on August 8 on Peacock, offering fans a chance to see Curry in a whole new light while enjoying a fresh and entertaining story.
