Mike McCarthy is optimistic about the Dallas Cowboys’ potential as a “championship program,” despite the franchise not winning a Super Bowl in over two decades.
Despite the lack of recent championship success, McCarthy believes the team knows how to win and has the right elements in place. However, he acknowledges the disappointment of not yet achieving playoff success and is determined to overcome that hurdle.
“My message would be this: We have established a championship program, it’s just not the world championship yet,” McCarthy said. “We know how to win, we know how to train to win, we have the right people, but we have not crossed the threshold of winning playoff games and it’s extremely disappointing to be sitting here talking about it. I know how to win and we will get over that threshold. I have total confidence in it and that’s why I’m standing here today.”

In response, sports commentator Stephen A. Smith expressed disbelief at McCarthy’s statement, emphasizing the contradiction in claiming a championship program while acknowledging the struggle to win playoff games. Smith questioned the logic of considering a program championship-worthy without playoff success and found McCarthy’s assertion perplexing.
“What?! This is not funny,” Smith said. “That man just sat in front of a microphone, with cameras from national television rolling, and said we have a championship program. That’s what he said. A championship program but in the same breath he said we just haven’t figured out how to win playoff games yet. Excuse me?! Did I miss something that championships are won without winning playoff games?!”
As the Cowboys gear up for the next season, McCarthy faces the challenge of proving skeptics, including Smith, wrong by achieving success in the playoffs and living up to the label of a “championship program.”
