ESPN’s recent layoffs have sparked widespread discussions in the media industry.
Stephen A. Smith, one of the network’s top stars, felt compelled to share his thoughts on the matter during his podcast, The Stephen A. Smith Show.
He expressed his sadness over seeing several on-camera personalities, whom he considered friends, lose their jobs, but he also acknowledged that these cuts were expected.
Smith mentioned that when Disney announced 7,000 layoffs, everyone associated with ESPN knew this day would come, though they hoped it wouldn’t affect them personally.
He stressed the importance of never taking anything for granted, especially as a Black person. He declared that he always remains vigilant and never assumes he is secure, even though First Take has been the number one show for over a decade. Addressing the critics who questioned why certain personalities were let go while he stayed, Smith responded fiercely, telling them to “kiss his ass twice.”
He called out those in the industry who failed to question the higher-paid individuals at ESPN who don’t have the same level of success, ratings, or revenue.
Notably, he pointed out that none of them were Black, raising concerns about bias in the industry.
However, Smith also reminded people not to blame Disney or ESPN for these layoffs, as they are merely making business decisions.
He explained that revenue and ratings are paramount, especially due to the impact of COVID-19 on Disney’s financial situation. Smith further emphasized the significant losses incurred by the closure of Disney parks worldwide and the ongoing pandemic’s global effect.
Lastly, Smith acknowledged that Disney is still in a financial crisis and cannot recover billions of dollars overnight. He mentioned that if not for the substantial losses incurred by the company, figures like Jeff Van Gundy, David Pollack, Todd McShay, Jalen Rose, and Neil Everett would not have been let go.
He also expressed concern for the producers, editors, and other staff who lost their jobs or fear they may be next, illustrating the uncertain climate within the company.
