Stephen A. Smith doesn’t miss a beat.
On a recent episode of ESPN’s ‘First Take,’ host Stephen A. Smith sparked considerable discussion with comments linking former president Donald Trump’s campaign slogan to broader racial dynamics, particularly in the context of athlete Caitlin Clark. Smith referenced Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again,” which he argued some people interpret as a racially charged message of “Make America White Again.”
He suggested that this sentiment has contributed to highlighting existing societal divides rather than creating new ones. “It is not a divide that is created. It is a divide that is illuminated because it’s highlighting and showing that it’s been in existence all along. It hasn’t gone anywhere,” Smith elaborated.
These remarks led to a backlash on social media, with various reactions from the public. The conservative website OutKick escalated the discourse by describing Smith’s commentary as an “insane rant” about Clark, a characterization that quickly reached the ESPN host. Smith was undeterred by the criticism, defending his statement emphatically in a follow-up post on social media.
“More lies. More misrepresentations. No surprise. Caitlin was fantastic in college and will be in the pros. I’ve said this repeatedly. I say it now. Most fans know this. But some give her the kind of support they’d never give others — just as deserving. Not all, but some. said it. I meant it and it’s been proven. We all know this. Twist it anyway you want. But live with it. That’s America,” Smith asserted.

Smith’s retort not only reiterated his admiration for Clark’s talent but also emphasized his view that the treatment and support she receives can reflect broader racial and societal issues.
This incident highlights the complex interactions between sports, media, and social commentary, leaving audiences to ponder the implications of such discussions in the public sphere.
