Skip Bayless’s announcement that he will be leaving Fox Sports’ Undisputed after an eight-year run has been met with celebration by many fans.
However, Stephen A. Smith isn’t joining in the festivities.
In the latest episode of his podcast, Smith dedicated a segment to discussing his long-standing relationship with Bayless, which dates back to his pre-First Take days. Smith expressed deep gratitude to Bayless for giving him a significant career opportunity by bringing him onto First Take years ago.
He acknowledged that his career trajectory wouldn’t have been the same without Bayless’s support.
“Where I am, where I’ve been, and especially where the hell I’m going with the stuff I’ve got coming down the pike in a matter of months… none of it’s possible if Skip Bayless doesn’t extend that helping hand and bring me on First Take,” Smith said. “I’ll never forget that. I never have, I never will. You want to hold on to something that I have to say about Skip Bayless, hold on to that.”

While Smith’s gratitude is evident, many sports fans have a different perspective on Bayless.
They see him not as a mentor or opportunity-giver but as a provocateur known for his outrageous, rage-baiting takes designed to attract hate-watchers.
Bayless’s controversial remarks, such as his insensitive comments about Damar Hamlin’s heart attack incident or criticizing Dak Prescott for admitting to battling depression after his brother’s death, have led many to believe that his primary intent is self-promotion.
For Smith, feeling indebted to Bayless is understandable given their history. However, it raises the question: would Bayless have recruited Smith if he had known that Smith would eventually surpass him in popularity and influence?
As Bayless exits Undisputed, the sports media landscape reflects on his complex legacy—one that includes giving opportunities to rising stars like Smith, while also being a polarizing figure known for his contentious commentary.
