Stephen A. Smith’s unwavering confidence leads him to utter the most unconventional statements on air.
This week, Smith managed to initiate another one of those awkward moments during a live broadcast, involving Molly Qerim. The cringe-inducing episode revolved around Smith’s persistent use of the word “vibrating” on air.
The veteran ESPN commentator had previously discussed Qerim’s phone spontaneously going off during broadcasts on “First Take.” However, on this particular occasion, he felt compelled to address it once again.

Qerim responded by clarifying that her phone was not ringing but set to silent mode with a vibrating alert.
Smith playfully questioned, “I tried to say ‘ringing,’ but do you want me to say ‘vibrating’ on air? You seem to enjoy it when I mention ‘vibrating’ on air when your phone goes off. Do you really want me to do that?”
In a comical twist, Dan Orlovsky, who was off-camera, picked up a Philadelphia Phillies flag from the First Take table and playfully draped it over his head.
Despite Qerim’s attempts to respond, Smith persisted with his unusual commentary, urging her to stick with “ringing.”
In jest, Qerim distanced herself from Smith’s comments, to which he replied, “I’m trying to avoid the vibrating.”
Orlovsky chimed in with humor, remarking, “I’m trying to avoid getting fired.”
As many viewers noted in the comment section, it’s possible that the HR department might need to intervene to prevent such conversations from occurring on air in the future. Stephen A. Smith may think he’s funny, but this particular moment was simply cringe-inducing.
