As the NBA continues to explore ways to revamp its All-Star Game format, one of the standout events from 2024—the “NBA vs. WNBA” three-point shootout—looks set to return in February 2025, but this time with an exciting twist. The inaugural version of this unique contest became a fan favorite, and the league seems eager to capitalize on its success by making it even bigger and better.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry and New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu are actively planning to bring back their thrilling three-point showdown during the 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend, which will take place in San Francisco. But this time, they are aiming to raise the stakes by recruiting additional star power—namely, Dallas Mavericks sharpshooter Klay Thompson and Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark.
“Sources tell me that Curry and Ionescu are continuing discussions on bringing back that shootout,” Charania reported during NBA Countdown on Friday. “Plans are already underway for the return of this popular event, and there’s also talk of potentially including Klay Thompson and Caitlin Clark in the competition this year.”
Adding Thompson and Clark to the contest would undeniably enhance the appeal of the event. Klay Thompson, who spent his entire career with the Golden State Warriors before joining the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, remains one of the league’s most prolific shooters.
Known for his incredible shooting form and his history as part of the iconic “Splash Brothers” duo alongside Curry, Thompson would certainly add an element of nostalgia and excitement to the competition.

Meanwhile, Caitlin Clark has quickly established herself as one of the most electrifying players in the WNBA. After a stellar collegiate career, Clark took the league by storm during her rookie season in 2024, earning WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.
She set a record by making the second-most three-pointers in a single WNBA season, with an impressive tally of 122. Her presence in the three-point contest would offer fans the chance to see one of the game’s brightest young stars go head-to-head with NBA and WNBA legends.
The original “NBA vs. WNBA” three-point shootout debuted during the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis and quickly became a highlight of the festivities. In that contest, Curry narrowly edged out Ionescu to take home the win, scoring 29 points compared to Ionescu’s 26.
The competition was made all the more intriguing by Ionescu shooting with WNBA basketballs from the NBA three-point line, demonstrating her impressive range and challenging Curry until the very end.
The potential addition of Thompson and Clark to this year’s event is poised to create even more excitement, adding layers of rivalry and narrative that fans are sure to love.
With both NBA and WNBA talent competing side by side, the contest has the chance to further blur the lines between the two leagues and celebrate the impressive shooting skills of players across professional basketball.
NBA All-Star Weekend 2025 is set to take place from February 14 to 16 at the Chase Center in San Francisco, and the anticipation for the “NBA vs. WNBA” three-point contest is already building.
Whether it’s the nostalgia of Curry and Thompson reuniting in some form, or the prospect of seeing Caitlin Clark challenge NBA greats alongside Ionescu, the event promises to be a highlight of the weekend, showcasing elite shooting talent from both leagues.
Fans will be eager to see whether Curry can defend his crown or if one of the new challengers will step up and steal the spotlight.
