As the 2024 NFL season gets underway, the league has issued a stern warning to specific players and teams, making it clear that it will not hesitate to impose suspensions for violations. According to league sources, the NFL recently sent a memo to more than 20 players and their respective teams, emphasizing the importance of safety and sportsmanship. The memo warns that suspensions will be handed out for any infractions, reinforcing the league’s commitment to player safety.
The move is seen as part of the NFL’s ongoing effort to make the game safer and reduce dangerous play on the field, sources told ESPN. The memo was reportedly directed at players who have previously been penalized or suspended for on-field violations. Although the NFL did not provide a specific list of players, it is known that these individuals have faced league discipline over the past two seasons.
Players who have been suspended in the past for on-field incidents include Buffalo Bills practice squad safety Kareem Jackson, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Damontae Kazee, Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman, Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans, and New England Patriots defensive tackle Trysten Hill. The NFL is making it clear that repeated infractions will not be tolerated moving forward, signaling its intent to crack down on any conduct that jeopardizes player safety.
In addition to the warnings directed at players, the NFL has also reintroduced its club remittance policy, which holds teams financially accountable for their players’ safety violations. This policy, which had been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, is now back in effect for the 2024 season. Teams will face fines if their players are suspended for issues related to safety violations, personal conduct, or drug suspensions.

According to the memo, teams will be required to remit fines when a player on their roster is disciplined for what the league terms “Covered Infractions.” For each infraction, a fine of up to $75,000 will be applied toward the team’s season total. The policy will be triggered when a team’s cumulative fines exceed $90,000 in a single season. Once that threshold is crossed, the team must pay an amount equal to the total fines or suspensions incurred by its players.
“For example, if players on a club incur a total of $175,000 in fines or suspensions for Covered Infractions during the 2024 season, that club will be required to remit $175,000,” the memo stated.
The NFL’s renewed focus on enforcing discipline and safety comes at a time when player welfare is under increased scrutiny.
With this policy, the league aims to ensure that both players and teams are held accountable for maintaining a safer environment on the field.
The combination of player suspensions and team fines is intended to deter dangerous conduct and set a new standard for the 2024 season.
