When Taylor Swift penned “Fifteen” and reflected on the allure of dating a high school football player, few could have predicted she’d eventually be linked to one of the NFL’s biggest stars.
During her Eras Tour stop in Lyon, France, on Sunday, June 2, Swift, now 34, revisited “Fifteen” from her 2008 album, “Fearless.”
This time, the line “In your life, you’ll do things greater than dating the boy on the football team” resonated differently, given her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs standout Travis Kelce, which began last year.
Swift playfully acknowledged this twist of fate while performing an acoustic version of the song, her smile broad and cheeks blushing as she sang the line to an exuberant crowd.
The performance included a mash-up with “You’re on Your Own, Kid” from her 2022 album “Midnights,” and also featured a debut live performance of “The Prophecy” from her April release “The Tortured Poets Department.” “Some nights like tonight I try out playing a song that I’ve never played live before,” she shared with the audience.
“Fifteen” originally explored Swift’s experiences during her freshman year at Henderson High School and her friendship with Abigail Anderson, whom she met at that time.
“I wrote this around the storyline of my best friend from high school, Abigail. I started with the line, ‘Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind,’ and built the rest from there,” Swift explained at the song’s release. “I really wanted to capture our first year of high school because that was a time of significant growth for me.”
Swift has previously described “Fifteen” as her favorite track on “Fearless,” commenting on the naiveté of high school: “You don’t know anything, but you think you know everything.”
Meanwhile, as Swift captivated fans in France, back in Kansas City, Kelce faced playful probing about their relationship at a charity event, where actor Jason Sudeikis inquired about his intentions towards Swift. Kelce responded with a laugh, remaining elusive about their future.
Despite the curiosity surrounding their relationship, a source recently informed Us Weekly that Kelce has “no plans” to propose to Swift in the near future.
