Simone Biles shared how the criticism her husband, Jonathan Owens, received after his appearance on the “Pivot” podcast significantly affected her mental health.
During a December 2023 interview, Owens, an NFL player, sparked controversy by jokingly claiming he didn’t know Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history, before they began dating. He further stirred reactions by stating he was more of a “catch” than the seven-time Olympic medalist, commenting, “I always say that the men are the catch.”
These remarks led to a backlash on social media, where some interpreted his comments as demeaning towards Biles, who was present during the podcast. Despite this, on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, Biles defended Owens, clarifying that he had praised himself without diminishing her achievements. “He said he was a catch,” Biles noted, adding, “Because he is! I’ve never met a man like him.”
Biles recounted leaving the interview feeling positive, only to be met with harsh online criticism directed at Owens. “I thought everything was OK, and then I go on Twitter and everybody’s like, ‘Divorce this man. He’s mean!’” she said. Biles expressed her frustration, emphasizing Owens’ kind nature and his efforts to support her, stating, “He praises the ground that I walk on.”

Initially finding the situation amusing, Biles admitted the ongoing negativity eventually saddened her. “I thought it was hilarious at first and then it hurt my feelings,” she confessed. During a particularly tough moment, she expressed her distress about the harsh judgments of her husband. “That really hurt that they were talking about my husband like that. For me, it’s like, talk about me all you want, but don’t come for my family, never.”
Despite the turmoil, Biles remained supportive publicly, commenting “??? for life” under an Instagram post by Owens, which he captioned, “Unbothered ??? Just know we locked in over here ??.”
The couple continues to stand strong amidst the controversy. Owens is even planning to support Biles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, making arrangements to leave his summer training camp. Biles humorously remarked on Owens’ view that football is the toughest sport, noting that it isn’t even an Olympic sport, and expressed her excitement for him to experience the Olympics firsthand.
Biles and Owens began their relationship in 2020 and were married three years later, demonstrating their strong bond despite public scrutiny.
