For Simone Biles, there was a clear and heartfelt reason why she and Jordan Chiles decided to bow down to their rival and friend Rebeca Andrade after she won the gold medal: “Sportsmanship.”
This act of respect was widely celebrated as a powerful demonstration of women supporting women, although it did attract some criticism. For Biles, the gesture was deeply meaningful.
“[We were] showing good sportsmanship [and] having fun out there because it was the last competition,” the 27-year-old superstar gymnast explained to PEOPLE.
This moment was the culmination of a remarkable and record-breaking Olympics for Biles, who earned three gold medals and one silver at the 2024 Games. Her sole silver came in the floor final, where Andrade emerged victorious. It was in this event that Biles and Chiles, 23, bowed to the six-time Olympic medalist Andrade, 25, as a sign of respect and camaraderie.
The significance of that podium went beyond the medals—it was the first time in Olympic history that the podium was entirely composed of Black gymnasts. This historic achievement resonated deeply with Biles.

“It was representation,” Biles said. “For all the little girls and boys that look like us, for them to believe in themselves that they can do it too. I was once in their shoes when I saw Gabby [Douglas] win and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, if she can do it, I can do it.'”
Throughout the Games, Biles has been an inspiring figure, not only for her athletic prowess but also for her emphasis on representation and the importance of mental health. She has consistently set an example for gymnasts, athletes, and fans who look up to her.
Reflecting on her experience at the Paris Games compared to her time in Tokyo in 2021, Biles shared that she is “in a better spot, mentally and physically.”
“I’m just happy with overall what I’ve been able to accomplish and what I’ve done, because putting in that therapy and that mental work meant everything to me, and it was much needed,” she said.
Biles’ journey through the 2024 Olympics, marked by both her athletic achievements and her moments of sportsmanship and solidarity, serves as a testament to her dedication and the positive impact she continues to have on the world of sports and beyond.
Her actions have sparked conversations about the importance of sportsmanship, the representation of Black athletes, and the ongoing dialogue about mental health in sports. By bowing to Andrade, Biles showed that true greatness in sports is not just about winning medals but also about uplifting others and embodying the spirit of the competition.
As she looks forward, Biles remains committed to her sport and to being a role model for future generations. Her legacy is not only defined by her medals but also by her character, resilience, and unwavering support for her peers.
