Shohei Ohtani has decided not to participate in the 2024 Home Run Derby, despite expressing interest in the event just last week.
Ohtani, a star player for the Los Angeles Dodgers, announced on Tuesday that he would be skipping the event, which will be held at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. His decision is primarily due to his ongoing rehabilitation efforts.
“I’m in the middle of my rehab progression, so it doesn’t look like I’ll be participating,” Ohtani said through a translator, according to Beth Harris of The Associated Press.
Ohtani has been impressive at the plate, hitting 27 home runs this season. However, he is still recovering from offseason elbow surgery, which has prevented him from pitching this year.

The decision not to participate in the Home Run Derby was influenced by concerns from both Ohtani and the Dodgers about the potential impact on his rehab.
They worried that the extensive swinging required for the derby could hinder his recovery. Additionally, fatigue was cited as a factor in the decision-making process.
As of now, Baltimore Orioles slugger Gunnar Henderson is the only confirmed participant for the 2024 Home Run Derby.
While Ohtani and Aaron Judge would have been major attractions, neither will be taking part in the event this year. The absence of these stars is a disappointment for fans, but Ohtani’s health and successful rehabilitation are clearly the top priorities.
