Social media erupted in criticism this week as Caleb Williams, the projected No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft, faced backlash for his appearance at a USC basketball game, where he sported painted nails and a pink phone case.
Unfortunately, the scrutiny highlights the lack of privacy afforded to public figures like Williams.
On the “Nightcap” show, Shannon Sharpe voiced his frustration with Williams’ detractors, questioning why others are so fixated on how he chooses to express himself. Sharpe emphasized that individuals should be free to embrace their personal style without judgment from others.
“People immediately comment on his nails and his cellphone, which is pink. When did men start caring about how men dress? What they wore? The pink nails, the pink phone,” Sharpe said. “When did men because so obsessed with other men? How do you get to determine what’s acceptable for someone else? Your norm is not someone else’s norm.”
Joining the defense of Williams, Kyle Brandt of NFL Network condemned the antiquated viewpoints being expressed on social media, referring to them as “caveman takes.” Brandt expressed confidence in Williams’ abilities as a quarterback, asserting his belief that Williams will excel in his future NFL career.
Despite the uproar, Williams remains unfazed by the criticism, focusing instead on his preparations for the NFL draft. His recent standout performance at USC’s Pro Day has only reinforced his status as the top prospect in this year’s draft.
