Football season may still be months away, but Shannon Sharpe is already weighing in with his critiques, particularly targeting CBS’s lead analyst Tony Romo.
On a recent episode of “Nightcap,” co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson compared Greg Olsen’s commentary style to Romo’s, following the announcement that Tom Brady would replace Olsen. Johnson praised Romo for his ability to predict plays before they unfold, attributing it to Romo’s high-level playing experience.
Sharpe, however, expressed skepticism about the uniqueness of Romo’s insights. “I think a lot of guys can do that,” Sharpe countered, suggesting that Romo’s predictive commentary might rob fans of discovering the plays themselves. He humorously noted, “You’re either running the ball or throwing it. You got a 50/50 chance – it’s not that hard to guess.”
Further, Sharpe pointed out that Romo’s access to team practices might give him an unfair advantage in making these predictions, implying that they might not be as spontaneous as they appear.

Romo, who joined CBS in 2017, quickly gained fame for his ability to anticipate plays live on air, even shining during the Super Bowl broadcast in 2019.
However, recent seasons have seen critiques of the quality of his commentary alongside Jim Nantz, prompting CBS executives to meet with Romo post the 2023 season to discuss improvements.
Despite these critiques, Romo is set to remain a staple in the CBS booth, having secured a 10-year, $160 million contract in 2019. Meanwhile, Brady is set to become the new premier voice for NFL broadcasts after clinching a massive 10-year, $375 million deal, replacing Olsen on CBS’s “A” team.
