Shannon Sharpe did not mince words when expressing his disapproval of Jameis Winston’s decision to go against New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen during Sunday’s game.
Winston, disregarding the victory formation, handed the ball off to Jamaal Williams for a touchdown, leading to controversy after the game.
“I apologized to [Allen] because the play was ‘Victory.’ But I also explained to D.A that it was a team decision,” Winston told reporters. “I think that when you have a team morale and I asked the guys, ‘What do you want to do?’ We know how much Jamaal means to this team. And I understood from D.A.’s perspective.”
Sharpe criticized Winston for displaying a “loser’s mentality” and suggested cutting him from the team.
“(It) makes Dennis Allen look like he’s lost control of that locker room,” Sharpe said on First Take. “But I say this, I would cut Jameis Winston today. I would not want him on my team. That’s loser’s mentality.
“And people are saying ‘well Shannon, what about when Dan Marino fake spiked the ball? Or Payton Manning?’ They were not in victory formation. The defense is conceding. If you wanna run the ball, let the defense line up. Don’t you fool ’em, think it’s a victory formation, and then drive off the ball…That’s going rogue. Dennis Allen’s gonna probably have to go. Because his players have no respect for him.”
He also expressed concern that Dennis Allen might have lost control of the locker room, indicating that Allen’s coaching position could be in jeopardy due to Winston’s actions. The situation has added another layer of uncertainty for both Winston and Allen as the season concludes.
