Sean Payton is clearly not a fan of Russell Wilson.
The Broncos are shelling out a hefty sum to keep Russell Wilson off their quarterback roster in Denver. After two underwhelming seasons with the Mile High City squad, Wilson is now aiming to rewrite his narrative in Pittsburgh.
While many see Wilson as a player with potential for high rewards and minimal risks for the Steelers, Sean Payton, the former Broncos head coach, has no qualms about how things unfolded.
Initially acquired in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks, Russell Wilson’s arrival was expected to elevate Denver’s quarterback position and position them as instant playoff contenders. However, the anticipated transformation never materialized, marking the Russell Wilson era in Denver as largely disappointing.
Across two seasons, the team amassed an 11-19 record with the Super Bowl-winning quarterback at the helm. Tensions escalated when Sean Payton took over as head coach in 2023, ultimately resulting in Wilson’s benching before the season’s conclusion and his subsequent release in the offseason.
Now donning a Steelers jersey, Wilson signed for the league minimum while obliging Denver to shoulder nearly $40 million of his 2024 salary. Sean Payton, however, remains unfazed by Denver’s financial burden, expressing no remorse about parting ways with Wilson.
In the bluntest manner possible, Payton shrugged off any difficulty associated with releasing Wilson, despite the significant salary cap hit. “No,” he curtly responded when questioned.

With Wilson out of the picture, Denver is poised to move forward with Jarrett Stidham, unless they acquire another quarterback before the season commences. Alternatively, they may opt to select a quarterback from the talented pool available in the upcoming draft.
Meanwhile, Russell Wilson has swiftly transitioned to the next chapter, introducing a new motto with the Steelers while continuing his online antics. Though some may perceive his actions as trolling, Wilson seems determined to refresh his image with his new team.
Interestingly, the Steelers are slated to face the Broncos in a future matchup, promising an intense showdown between the two sides. With lingering tensions, it’s safe to say that there will be no shortage of competitive spirit on the field.
